Coronavirus: Has our crown become crooked?

The other day I went to a BIG(and I mean enormous, huge, gigantic, gargantuan) Tesco store to buy bleach and I couldn't find any. Can you believe, a big Tesco store out of bleach? The only thing I found close to bleach were some DVDs of the anime series Bleach on the media store next door. I was like, "Oh dear, what has happened here?"  😨

I didn't make the connection between the lack of bleach and the Coronavirus immediately, but after cleaning the dining Super Sayian style and calming down, I realized that people are rushing over to the stores to buy supplies, in case they are told to self-isolate because they are infected with COVID-19. Or maybe because they want to self-isolate, for reasons we will see later.

No matter the cause, it seems that the situation is getting worse and worse, every day more and more infections are piling up and currently there are about 170,000 total cases recorded. The death rate reaches as high as 3.4%, according to the World Health Organization and the total infection curve has not reached its spike yet. Countries are locking their borders, flights are being canceled, whole cities are on quarantine. Mass panic and panic of the masses.

Whether people are over-reacting is of course, debatable. Personally, I believe that fear is never a good advisor. For example, people are running to the stores to buy supplies, however, the stores are crammed with... people! Lots of! And some of them are infected! Achoo! 💦 Oops! 😅😅

I have to commend the World Health Organisation for the swift warning of a pandemic. Swift? 😣Hmm, now that I think about it, debatable as well, a Chinese doctor that tried to warn about the spreading of the virus but was silenced by the police? COVID-19 took him, rest in peace.

So, what I wanted to say is that it is in our blood, apart from the bloody virus, to enter the so-called fight or flight mode(the latter is canceled heh) when we deal with perceived threats; we fight back.

But what happens with threats that we do not perceive? Just because we are not aware of a danger, it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

There are other pandemics that have spread throughout the globe but appropriate measures have not been taken yet. I'm talking about internet addiction. Whether it is social media or porn, Facebook, Twitter or Pornhub or whatever, the reality is that these platforms affect us in a more detrimental way than the Corona - or any virus. They do not contain physical, but mental viruses! Viral!

Whenever you connect to Facebook, you see the posts of other people, you see what your friends around the globe are doing and you get a sense of connection. A false sense of connection.  You're alone in your bedroom, dude! Or... maam.

I try to think the totality of the internet, especially social media, like a hive mind that people tune into and gradually, their ability for critical thought drops. Because, why think for yourself when others have thought things for you and they serve them to you on the click of your mouse? Your mind becomes infected with ideas, beliefs, and emotions that aren't even yours! Not all of them are viruses, though.

More or less we know where too much usage of social media leads to: isolation, loss of social skills, depression, interference with work performance, stress, sedentary life(which leads to weight gain  and more health problems) etc-etc. Everyone knows the effects these platforms have in our lives, yet not many are willing to stop using them, because so many are hooked nowadays.

If only we reacted to the social media pandemic as quickly as we have done with the Coronavirus.

But I guess there are other things that come in play here: business and profit are often considered more important for some than the mental health of the masses. Ever since the beginning of time, man has preyed upon his fellow man.

And that is what might happen(most probably will) with the spread of COVID-19. We will see cases where people sell products/services for astronomical prices due to lack of supply. If you're reading this and you feel this is an opportunity for you to make a profit, I kindly ask of you not to be a greedy asshole and be nice to your fellow man. Some things are more important than money and no matter how many shit-rolls you sell for $50 dollars each(or whatever your fappin' currency is), you will not become a better person.

As for normal people like you and me(hope so), the most sensible thing to do is to "mind your surroundings," as Ra's al Ghul in Batman used to say to... Batman and to "conquer your fear." As Ra's al Ghul in Batman used to say to... Batman. 😐 Washing your hands is also a good idea. And don't touch things. And sneeze on your elbow. And fart on a pillow. Oh, and avoid going to places where many people go. You remember that minimarket that you ignored because you liked to go to Sainsbury's and Morrisons? Go there and make the owner rich! But leave something for the rest of ass... eh... I meant us.

As for my case, I said what I wanted to say. My hands are still a bit dirty though. By buying the Bleach series on the shelf of that anti-social media store, I make my hands clean. Muahaha 😁
